Ghosting Unghosting in SharePoint

In this article we will discuss about Ghosting Unghosting concept in SharePoint. You can also check my last article on Site Pages and Application pages here.

Site pages that are loaded from the file system are known as ghosted pages. And when these pages have been customized they are known as unghosted pages. Because once you customize files using SharePoint designer then the changed page content are stored in content database rather in the file system. And after that
all future renderings of the page will be retrieved from the content database.

In 2003 the concept was called as ghosting/unghosting.

In MOSS 2007 it was called as uncustomized/customized.

In SharePoint 2010 it is called as attached and detached.

But frequently we used ghosting/unghosting term.

To work with this type of pages, SharePoint 2010 designer loads the page content in safe mode. And if you want to edit the page contnet then we have to work in Advanced mode.
